Frequently Asked Questions

  • We do incorporate therapeutic techniques into every visit. Modalities we use include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), supportive psychotherapy, and psychodynamic psychotherapy.

Due to the limited time and medication-focused nature of psychiatry appointments, however, therapeutic content can be limited. Therapy is an integral part of mental health treatment and is almost always recommended in combination with medication treatment. We strongly recommend you see a dedicated mental health therapist in addition to your psychiatry appointments to see the most robust improvement in your symptoms.

  • We believe strongly in the power of human connection in the healing and treatment process. We also recognize the importance of empowering our patients to make healthy choices in all aspects of their lives in order to improve their mental health. At Appleby Psychiatry, that means we work hard to balance empathy and accountability as we walk through your mental health journey with you.

We are also very aware of the value of an accurate diagnosis in the process of getting appropriate treatment. We take this seriously and spend a significant amount of time getting an extensive history and educating our patients about their symptom patterns and trajectories.

  • Many psychiatrists in private practice choose not to accept insurance in order to provide care that is more individualized & adaptive to each patient's needs.

Insurance plans often place restrictions on mental health treatment, such as limiting the frequency of appointments or mandating specific treatment approaches. These limitations can interrupt patient care and may slow the pace of symptom improvement.

By working outside of insurance, psychiatrists can spend more time with each patient, tailor treatment to individual needs, & make clinical decisions without outside interference or administrative delays, ultimately offering a higher standard of care.

You may also benefit from greater confidentiality, as your medical information is not shared with insurance providers.

At your request, we can provide a superbill following your appointment, which can be brought to your insurance company for potential reimbursement.

  • There are certain conditions that require close in-person and medically collaborative care that are not a good fit for the virtual model. These include:

    • Active eating disorders

    • Active substance use disorders

    • Unstable schizophrenia

  • This decision is made on a case by case basis, and indications and monitoring policies will need to be discussed in detail with the doctor.
